Methods for Ultimate Limit State Assessment of Marine Structures: A Benchmark Study

Author(s): Jeom Kee Paik, Jung Kwan Seo, Bong Ju Kim, Yong Suk Suh and Beom Seon Jang

During the last few decades, methods useful for ultimate limit state assessment of marine structures have been developed in the literature. It is considered that such methods are now mature enough to enter day-by-day design practice. The aim of the present paper is to conduct some benchmark studies on ultimate limit state assessment of ship plates, stiffened panels, and hull girders, using some candidate methods such as ANSYS nonlinear FEA, DNV PULS, ALPS/ULSAP, ALPS/HULL, and IACS common structural rules (CSR) methods. As an illustrative example, a hypothetical double hull oil tanker structure is studied. The ultimate limit states of bottom plates, deck stiffened panels, and bottom stiffened panels are analyzed by ANSYS, DNV PULS and ALPS/ULSAP methods, and their resulting computations are compared. The ultimate vertical bending moment capacity of the hull structure is analyzed by ALPS/HULL and IACS CSR methods, and their resulting computations are compared. The modeling uncertainties of each method considered are analyzed. The accuracy and applicability of the candidate methods are discussed. For the future use of other investigators, the ultimate limit state computations obtained from the present study are tabulated.
